about Merrell

Merrell is a maker of high-performance hiking boots. It is founded by Clark Matis, Randy Merrell, and John Schweizer in 1981. Merrell applied a 'no compromise' approach to their boot-making. The team added American cowboy boot technology to the Italian boot manufacturing process. The ¼-inch thick heel counter was designed to make boots last a decade. In fact the Wilderness boot, one of the earliest Merrell styles with its signature blue laces, still remains in the line today.

Merrell’s Hydro Runner Outlet online is a clog and sneaker all in one

Outdoor gear is having a moment, and Merrell is seizing it. Following the success of its Hydro Moc, the footwear brand’s 1TRL division is introducing a modified version called the Hydro Runner. Featuring a breathable mesh sock, the altered shoe offers additional support and a sneaker-like feel fit for all types of activity.

Merrell’s slip-on shoe arrives well into the mulement, a trend that’s popularized backless sneakers and foam clogs. Heatwaves and the general state of the world have people craving relaxation and ease of wear, values inherent to shoes like Crocs and Hydro Mocs — the latter of which is essentially a remix of the other.

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS — The Hydro Runner’s built-in sock may allow for mule season to extend past the warmer months, too. Its breathable mesh keeps wearers’ toes from getting too hot while providing additional structure and protection against the elements. Nylon pull tabs on the tongue and heel still ensure easy on-and-off wear, despite the shoe’s enclosed fit.

As a riff on the Hydro Moc, the Hydro Runner boasts the same exterior. Oval-shaped perforations span across its signature EVA upper, which is decorated with a marble-like print. A gray version of the print serves as a good option for outdoors enthusiasts, while a white iteration seems best for lifestyle wear. Each is topped off with contrasting mesh socks and heel straps.

Unlike most clogs, Merrell’s iteration features grip good enough to hike in. A 100-percent recycled EVA midsole is accompanied underfoot by a sticky, no-slip traction outsole, giving the Hydro Runner the same feel as a sneaker. Paired with the upper’s breathable mesh sock, wearers get the best of both worlds.

NOW UP FOR GRABS — For now, the Merrell 1TRL Hydro Runners are only available through the brand’s Australia website. Both the white and gray color schemes are up for grabs, with pairs retailing around $105 USD. You’ll have to pay more for international shipping, but the price is still a good deal considering the shoe’s clog and sneaker combo. The Hydro Runner is ready for anything, whether you’re looking to climb up a mountain or down subway stairs.

Take a First Look at the Reese Cooper x Merrell Hydro Moc Outlet Online

Shortly after partnering with Levi’s for his first-ever collaboration, 24-year-old designer Reese Cooper now teases RCI versions of unreleased Merrell 1TRL Hydro Mocs. Traditionally known for producing high-performance hiking boots, Merrell first introduced its Hydro Moc silhouette in January of 2021. With the recent rise in popularity of breathable foam slip-ons, due in large part to the popular slip-on footwear coming out of YEEZY and Crocs collaborations, the Hydro Mocs have entered the conversation as an attractive and accessible option.

Over the weekend, Merrell teased a new all-terrain Hydro Moc silhouette featuring heavy-duty rubber soles, lock laces, and a velcro ankle strap unit. While it’s still yet to be confirmed if it’ll be an official crossover, RCI reworks the new silhouette in tonal green and black/red colorways with RCI branding on the velcro straps.

Take an early look above and stay tuned for more updates.

Elsewhere in footwear, Nike Air Force 1 Low “Anniversary Edition” arrives in an asymmetric split design.

Editor's Notes: The battle of the foam sandals is as intense as ever. In one corner you have Crocs Clogs, with its customizable Jibbitz and Balenciaga collaborations, in another corner, there's the adidas YEEZY Foam RNNR that brings with it all the hype that Ye brings, and in the final corner, you have Merrell and its Hydro Moc.

If we're being completely honest, there are more similarities than differences between the three models, but each one comes with its own set of specialties. With Merrell, its pièce de résistance is its superior performance in the great outdoors

When the American footwear label launched in 1981, it found its success through high-performance hiking boots, and these slip-on shoes are made with the same adventurers in mind. The rubber water shoes are crafted from BLOOM EVA performance foam that is both lightweight and highly durable.

FloatEco Foam and a rubber rear heel sling add the final functional touches to the model, included for beach dwellers, water sports enthusiasts, and explorers traversing lakes.

However, the shoe's fan base goes beyond outdoorsy folks looking to wade through water, and those using the model's futuristic look to add an edge to their outfits will be keen to see its newest colorways.

Merrell’s Outlet In-house Product Incubator Has Stayed Out of the Spotlight

Merrell is taking strides to further strengthen its trail running reputation with the release of the MTL Long Sky 2 and MTL MQM—the latest products from the Merrell Test Lab (MTL). MTL is Merrell’s incubator that combines laboratory development with real-world athlete testing to create new advances in footwear, the company’s chief marketing officer, Janice Tennant, told OBJ.

“We celebrated our 40th [anniversary] last year, and we took some time to reflect on where we want to be in the next 40 years,” Tennant says. “One thing we want to do is showcase the innovation we have at Merrell, and through the Test Lab and working with our athletes, we can do that.”

Created in 2019, Merrell Test Lab released the original MTL Long Sky in early 2020. While the shoe was well received, the release and work done by the Test Lab was overshadowed by the pandemic, according to Tennant.

“We never really promoted the Test Lab,” she says. “But as we talked more to our consumers and our athletes, we found that people are really interested in the science that goes into our products. Our core consumers are really gearheads; they love technology and innovation. We decided to show what goes into the design and testing of our elite shoes.”

Merrell has started a separate Instagram page to showcase the Test Lab and products that come out of it, and is marketing a new slogan, “Same is Boring,” that highlights the challenges and demands of trail running (see the company’s campaign video, below, released this week). The new campaign is targeted directly at serious trail runners, Tennant says.

Merrell describes the MTL Long Sky 2 ($140) as a lightweight trail running shoe with the durability of a hiking boot, incorporating features like abrasion resistance and antibacterial properties. It uses FloatPro Foam in the midsole to absorb shock and Vibram Megagrip soles for class-leading traction.

The MTL MQM ($150) is touted as an all-around adventuring shoe, with MQM meaning “Moving Quickly [Over] Mountains.” Merrell describes the shoe as a hybrid that is “like three shoes in one: climbing shoe in front, hiker in the back, and agile enough to run in.”

Merrell’s VP of product development, Shaun Bohnsack, told OBJ it takes 5,000 hours to field test products that come out of the Merrell Test Lab.

“It’s definitely something that’s not on a normal timeline for commercial development, so the Test Lab is able to run parallel and release products when we feel they’re proven and ready,” Bohnsack says. “Our athletes are key in using our products hard and giving us feedback for development.”

Merrell works with athletes including 2021USA Half Marathon Trail Champion Rachel Tomajczyk to test and refine its Merrell Test Lab products.

“As an elite trail runner, I am constantly faced with changing weather and terrain conditions and I need a shoe that can keep up,” Tomajczyk wrote in a press release. “What the MTL products offer me is the confidence I need to hit the trail and outperform my competition while pushing myself to perform my best.”
